A Milwaukee mother said she fatally shot a man who broke into her home Monday morning in order to protect herself and her two children, WTMJ-TV reported.
The mother, who requested anonymity, told WTMJ that she was in the shower when she heard her 12- and 14-year-old children screaming from the living room.
She then dashed to her bedroom, grabbed her gun, and dashed into the hallway to confront the intruder.
“It all happened so fast — an adrenaline rush,” the mother told WTMJ.
According to the woman, she shot the man several times because “he wouldn’t stop coming,” as her two pit bull dogs were allegedly attacking him.
According to the mother, who spoke to WTMJ, the intruder was acting erratically and appeared to be in his late 30s.
The mother was taken into custody by Milwaukee police but later released after being questioned, according to the station. The police have not yet identified the man.
Police said in a statement to WTMJ that they wouldn’t be providing any further details and would instead refer the case to the district attorney’s office.
According to the station, community activist Bushraa Rahman supported the mother’s actions and assisted in cleaning up the house after authorities removed the body.
“She was scared because her children were there with her,” Rahman told WTMJ. “So, she did what any mother would do. She defended her children.”
Rahman added to the station that the shooting “was an act of self-defense. Somebody comes in your house, what do you call it?”
“In today’s … day and age, with mental health and everything else that’s taking place in the world, I mean, you better protect yourself. To be honest, you have to,” Rahman also told WTMJ.
