How devoted and protective dogs can be is amazing. They are constantly willing to step up and assist anyone in need, including both humans and other dogs.
The fact that they are defending another animal is even more motivating. We adore witnessing unlikely relationships between various species, such as this dog’s friendship with a wounded deer.
Sarge, a 9-year-old German shepherd, recently welcomed a brand-new sibling who was found abandoned on the side of the road by his owner Cheryl Stephen.
Cheryl was shocked when the dog immediately offered to take care of the helpless deer, whom she named Buckwheat.
“Something clicked in Sarge and he took to Buckwheat instantly,” Cheryl told The Dodo. “He wanted to be involved with every aspect of Buckwheat’s care… He took on the role of being Buckwheat’s guardian.”
Sarge was happy to lead the deer as he grew and stood up again, and Buckwheat stuck close to him like he was his big brother.
“When we’d take Buckwheat outdoors, Sarge walked alongside him and kept him from wandering,” Cheryl said.
In time, Buckwheat matured. He eventually reached the point where he was too big for the house and no longer required Sarge’s assistance.
He was finally prepared to go back into nature.
Although Buckwheat is now living independently, Sarge still has a lot of deer to care for.
Sarge is consistently eager to assist Cheryl as she cares for injured and abandoned deer. Even though some of the deer do not survive, they do their best to love and care for them.
“When I walk in the door carrying a fawn, Sarge springs into action,” Cheryl told The Dodo. “He wants to check them over and he will frantically sniff and nose around to determine their condition.”
“The fawns are drawn to Sarge and feel safe in his presence. Sarge won’t leave their side.”
