After getting custom wheels, a miniature horse who couldn’t use his hind legs runs for the first time

Horses are magnificent creatures, born to gallop and run free. Unfortunately, not all of them can, such as one miniature horse born with a disability that prevented him from using his hind legs.

But that all changed when some kind human built this horse a custom wheelchair, allowing him to run for the first time on his own.

Turbo is a miniature horse that has had mobility problems since birth. He was born with two luxating patellas, which means his kneecaps were stuck at the wrong angles, preventing him from supporting weight on his hind legs, according to Walkin’ Pets.

Road to Refuge Farm Sanctuary in North Haven, Connecticut, took him in. Megan Pereira, a mixed animal vet tech, was inspired to start the sanctuary in order to prevent farm animals from being euthanized.

“I lean towards the special needs ones, the broken ones, the really medical intensive cases,” Megan said.

When she heard Turbo’s story, she knew she had to take in the two-month-old miniature horse and give him a chance.

Despite the horse’s disabilities, she described Turbo as a normal, playful foal. She began looking for a way to allow Turbo to walk on his own after taking care of his medical needs.

Turbo’s story was heard by Walkin’ Pets, an organization dedicated to providing mobility devices to injured and disabled animals, and they stepped in to assist.

They went to the farm and fitted Turbo with a customized wheelchair in the hopes that it would allow the young horse to walk again. Turbo’s life changed in an instant.

“The minute we buckled him into his cart, he took off running!! He did amazing,” Megan said.

“Seeing Turbo ‘walk’ before any assistance and dragging his legs to being in his cart – I almost started crying. I am not a crier, but I almost started crying. He was running, bucking – it was all very exciting.”

Turbo’s new wheels have clearly given him a new lease on life. It’s truly inspiring to see him galloping around for the first time on his own.

In addition to assisting Turbo, Walkin’ Pets has done wonders for a wide range of animals, designing custom mobility solutions for tortoises and possums.
